For decades, literature fans and Harvard alumni have maintained and restored a memorial to Quentin Compson, tragic hero of William Faulkner’s greatest works and fictional alum of the Harvard Class of 1913. This was my magnum opus at the Gazette, spanning several months of interviews and research and connecting generations of alumni—all to honor a mutual friend who didn’t even exist.
Back when Harry Potter was the millennial touchstone, three Harvard theology students started a book group to practice sacred reading through the fantasy series. A year later, Harry Potter and the Sacred Text catapulted to the top of the podcast charts. I sat down with the show’s creators at the very beginning of their success to discuss their surprise success and how to make any book sacred.
Harvard students bear the stigma of everything critics believe about the university: elitist, smug, and deeply uncool. With this Instagram series, I wanted to show that Harvard students are just like anyone else their age. I talked to students around campus about anything except what they were studying, if only to give them a much-needed break. The response was extraordinary, exceeding our average engagement numbers and generating overwhelmingly positive comments. We even caught the attention of then-President Larry Bacow.
It can’t always be about asking for money! Harvard throws dozens of events—advancement trainings, awards ceremonies, recognition dinners, and the world-famous Reunions Week, to name a few. A nice meal and time with the president can make the people who give their time and money feel recognized, but the fine details make it stick. Veritas coasters would have been easy, but these rebus puzzles became the unintended hit of the night. Attendees were going table to table to make sure they had the full collection. (Ask me about the ones they didn’t use, i.e., the best ones.)
He has helped elevate the reports I write to the highest level that we, the donors, the gift officers, and the Dean, have come to expect, and he keeps projects moving with his readiness and responsiveness.
